The Economic Policy Co-ordination Team in EDS is responsible for providing the secretariat to the National Economic Council (NEC) jointly with colleagues in HM Treasury. It also supports the Prime Minister in his role as Chairman of the NEC, and works with the Prime Minister’s Delivery Unit to provide assurance on the delivery of actions agreed by the NEC.
The team is cross-disciplinary, comprising members of the Government Economic Service and policy professionals drawn from the range of departments represented on the NEC.
The Prime Minister announced the creation of the National Economic Council in October 2008.
The Council is a committee of Cabinet with a remit to co-ordinate the Government’s economic policies, and in particular its response to the effects of the global economic downturn on the United Kingdom. It is chaired by the Prime Minister with the Chancellor of the Exchequer as deputy chair.
The Council is supported by a senior officials group chaired by the Cabinet Secretary and the Permanent Secretary to the Treasury, and comprising of the Permanent Secretaries of the departments represented on the NEC and the heads of the Government Economic Service.
