The number of applications rose to 12,957 from 8,598 in 20041.

504 candidates were recommended for appointment, compared with 467 in
2004: an increase of 8 per cent.

In the Fast Stream as a whole, 94 per cent of vacancies were filled,
compared with 85 per cent in 2004. All Graduate Fast Stream vacancies
were filled.

43.7 per cent of successful candidates were women, an increase from 41.5
per cent in 2004.

7.1 per cent of successful candidates were from ethnic minorities, up
from 5.4 per cent in 2004.

The proportion of candidates recording a disability and recommended for
appointment decreased from 7.3 per cent in 2004 to 6.7 per cent in 2005.

Successful candidates graduated from over 50 universities.

In the In–Service competition, the proportion of successful candidates
increased to 49.5 per cent, up from 46.5 per cent in 2004.

selection process changed in 2005, and the figure provided is the closest
possible equivalent to that of previous years. An application is deemed to
have been submitted if a candidate has completed the self–assessment and
