This is the fifth quarterly report providing a brief commentary on the Cabinet Office sick absence results for the 12 month period ending 30 September 2008.

The Cabinet Office continues to place an emphasis on reducing absences recorded as either unknown or ill defined. As reported in the last quarterly report ill-defined illnesses have now been removed from the analysis.
The new reporting process introduced in February 2008 continues to demonstrate a sustained reduction in Unknown illnesses which have fallen by 0.4%.
Mental Disorders have now stablised. Musculoskeletal absences remain stable whilst Respiratory System related absences have increased by 2.1%.
The health and wellbeing initiative continued during this period and the number of staff with no sick absence during the period has increased by 1% since the last quarter.
The data for the 12 months ending 31 December 2008 will be pubished in April 2009.
