The Davidson Review of the implementation of European legislation published its final report on the 28 November. Lord Davidson QC found that while the unnecessary over-implementation of European legislation may not be as widespread in the UK as is sometimes claimed, there are areas in the stock of legislation where regulatory burdens can be removed.
The Davidson Review recommends specific simplification proposals in ten legislative areas including consumer sales, financial services, transport, food hygiene and waste legislation. It also makes a number of generic recommendations which are designed to spread best practice in the implementation of European legislation across departments and regulators. These recommendations will make a practical difference to business, consumers and the wider public, and help to ensure that the UK economy remains one of the most competitive in the world, while maintaining necessary regulatory protections.
The Davidson Review also undertook a call for evidence, which was open between 3 March and 25 May 2006. A summary of responses to the call for evidence was published on 19 July 2006.
