The Propriety and Ethics Team provides advice and guidance on the public bodies sector. This includes advice on the creation of new public bodies, on the organisation and management of public bodies and on appointments to the boards of public bodies.
The Cabinet Office publishes lists of central Government bodies. The Propriety and Ethics Team also publish guidance on the creation and management of new Executive Agencies and non-departmental public bodies (NDPB).
List of Ministerial Responsibilities. This lists all Government Departments, non-Ministerial Departments and Executive Agencies.
Public Bodies 2009 [External website]. This lists all non-departmental public bodies (NDPBs) as at 31 March 2009. Public Bodies 2009 also provides headline information on the staffing, funding and expenditure of the NDPB sector and statistical information on public appointments.
Executive Agencies: A Guide for Departments [External website]. This sets out the policy framework on the creation and abolition of Executive Agencies.
Public Bodies: A Guide for Departments [External website]. This provides detailed guidance to Departments on establishing new non-departmental public bodies (NDPBs).
The Propriety and Ethics Team publishes advice and guidance on making and managing public appointments. This complements the Code of Practice for Ministerial Appointments to Public Bodies published by the Commissioner for Public Appointments. The Team also publishes guidance on the standards expected from those who serve on the the boards of public bodies.
Making and Managing Public Appointments [External website]. This provides advice and guidance to all those involved in making public appointments. This includes examples of good practice.
Guidance for Departments on Pre-Appointment Hearings [PDF 47KB, 13 pages]. This provides advice to Departments on pre-appointment hearings by Parliamentary select committees. It sets out the issues that Departments should consider when making appointments to posts subject to pre-appointment hearings and provides advice and guidance on the process and on the role of departments, Ministers and select committees.
Induction Guidance for New Board Members of Public Bodies [External website]. This guidance sets out the steps that Departments and public bodies should take to ensure that new board members receive an appropriate level of induction when joining the board.
Guidance on Codes of Practice for Board Members of Public Bodies [External website]. This sets out the standards that all public office-holders should work to and contains model Codes of Conduct for board members and staff of non-departmental public bodies (NDPBs).
This shows the number of women, members of ethnic minorities and disabled people appointed to OCPA-regulated posts between April and September 2009.
