How to... Process for dealing with a petition presented to Parliament

  1. Member agrees to sponsor public petition.
  2. Member presents petition to Parliament either informally or formally.
  3. Text of petition is published in Hansard the following day.
  4. A copy of the text is sent to the Member and relevant Government department hard copy.
  5. Government department draft observation within 2 months. Even if it is to say that the relevant Minister will not be making any observation and the Government has no responsibility in this area.
  6. Government department will then send observations on petition to the Journal Office(0207 219 3310) and Hansard:
