Hilary Armstrong makes appointments to the Better Regulation Commission

Hilary Armstrong, Minister for the Cabinet Office, today announced three new appointments to the Better Regulation Commission.

The new members, Phillip Cullum, Donald Macrae and Dr Tim Heymann will strengthen the Commission in the areas of regulation affecting the environment and consumers. The new members will also bring expertise of social and behavioural science as well as the private and medical sectors to contribute to the Commission's work programme.

Lord Jamie Lindsay has taken over from Teresa Graham as Deputy Chair of the Commission having been a Commission member since last year.

The Better Regulation Commission is an independent advisory body whose terms of reference are, “To advise the Government on action to reduce unnecessary regulatory and administrative burdens and ensure that regulation and its enforcement are proportionate, accountable, consistent, transparent and targeted”.

Hilary Armstrong, Minister for the Cabinet Office said:

“I am delighted to announce the appointment of three new members to the Better Regulation Commission. These appointments will ensure that the Commission has the necessary resources and skills mix to take forward its work advising government on better regulation.”

Rick Haythornthwaite, Chairman of the Better Regulation Commission said:

“The Commission is excited by the appointment of Phillip Cullum, Donald Macrae and Dr Tim Heymann and we look forward to working with them. The new members will enrich the range of expertise and experience that is represented in the Commission. Their skills and knowledge will be instrumental in taking forward our work programme.”

  1. The Better Regulation Commission is an independent advisory body set up in 2006. Appointments are made by the Minister for the Cabinet Office, and are unpaid. A team of officials based in the Cabinet Office supports the Commission.
