Five cities to host ‘citizen forums’ to consider future role of public services in Government's policy review

CAB/011/07

Over 100 people making up ‘citizen forums’ have been independently selected to take part in the Government's Policy Review looking at challenges for the UK for the next decade and beyond.

Five cities, including London, Bristol, Leeds, Manchester and Birmingham will host meetings over the next two weeks where people from all walks of life will come together to discuss complex issues normally only faced by Government Ministers.

Ipsos MORI are undertaking the social research on behalf of the Cabinet Office and will ask citizens key questions specifically about the future of public services, their relationship towards them and their local community. Some of the people involved will meet in London for a final national summit in March where members will consolidate their views to be reported back to Government.

The questions the forums will discuss are:

  1. How can public services improve the levels of customer care which citizens experience?
  2. What can we do to encourage people to more actively improve their own lives and their communities'?
  3. How should we update the relationship between citizen and state? Do we need to have clearer rights and responsibilities for Government and for Citizens?

Additionally web forums are taking place at www.no10.gov.uk [External website] on other subject areas covered in the Policy Review – the next online forum will be on 21 February on ‘Britain in the World’, one of the review theme topics.
