CAB 012/06

www.direct.gov.uk [External website] – Public Services all in one place

The Cabinet Office today announced the move of Directgov from the e–Government unit to the Central Office of Information, COI.

The transfer of Directgov's central operation and support functions and staff will take place with effect from April 1st 2006.

Jim Murphy, Cabinet Office Minister with responsibility for Directgov, said:

“Our Transformational Government Strategy sets out to significantly improve the way we bring together online services for citizens. Directgov has been key to achieving this. The Cabinet Office has built up Directgov from nothing two years ago into its present position where it is now receiving more than two million visitors a month.

“Whilst Directgov remains a key component of Transformational Government it is now time to move it from the strategic centre of the Cabinet Office into a delivery arm of Government. With its excellent track record of getting information to those who need it COI is the ideal location for Directgov and will ensure that it goes from strength to strength.

Alan Bishop said:

“This is great news that benefits everyone involved, and most importantly, it makes sense for the public. COI's role at the heart of government communications and at the forefront of achieving efficiencies through the sharing of specialist services are a perfect fit with Directgov's vision to be a definitive guide to public services online,”

“COI has a long history of working with government departments to produce outstanding public information campaigns that communicate and connect with the public. As we celebrate our 60th anniversary, we look forward to a new era for government communications and for COI.”

Directgov brings public services together all in one place from across eleven Whitehall departments. A huge range of information is available on the site from; finding a local childminder to what to do when buying a property. Customers can also access services like searching for a course or taking a mock theory driving test. Transactions such as applying for car tax or planning a journey on foot, by car or by public transport are also on the site.

Since its launch in 2004 Directgov has constantly evolved to reflect the changing demands of citizens who want to efficiently manage their lives electronically. Directgov now receives more than 2.1 million hits a month and is a single route to a growing number of transactions in central and local government.”

The move is part of the ongoing programme to ensure effectiveness and efficiency from the Cabinet Office, ensuring functions are placed where they will best serve the public. Directgov will continue to take its direction from the Cabinet Office's Transformational Government Strategy.
