New Ministers in the Cabinet Office

The Cabinet Office welcomes a new ministerial team following last week's reshuffle.

Hilary Armstrong, formerly the Government's chief whip, is the new Cabinet level Minister for the Cabinet Office. She will also take responsibility for tackling social exclusion across Government.

Hazel Blears, previously Minister of State at the Home Office in charge of policing, is the new Minister without Portfolio and Labour party chair.

We also welcome two new Parliamentary Secretaries. Pat McFadden will support Hilary Armstrong's work on social exclusion. Ed Miliband will take responsibility for the Government's relationship with the third sector. This is the first Ministerial post for both.

New responsibilities

Between them, Hilary Armstrong, Ed Miliband and Pat McFadden will deal with the full range of Cabinet Office business and answer for the Department in Parliament.

The changes announced by the Prime Minister in the reshuffle also mean that the Department takes overall responsibility for two new areas: social exclusion and the third sector.

The allocation of responsibilities between the Ministers and how the new responsibilities are being resourced will be announced shortly, following discussions with the new Ministerial team.

Former Ministers in the Department

We say goodbye to Ian McCartney and Jim Murphy. Ian McCartney has become Trade Minister (a joint FCO/DTI post), in charge of one of the key economic portfolios in government. Jim Murphy has been promoted to Minister of State at the Department for Work and Pensions.
