9 Legal issues – Use of metric units of measurement

Published: May 2002 (Revised: August 2006)

UK Governments since 1965 have supported the aim of a progressive adoption of metric units of measurement. Guidance issued to public sector bodies in 1995 by the DTI advises that metric units should be used by public sector bodies, including Government departments, for all aspects of public business.

9.1 Guidance note on the use of Metric Units of measurement by the Public Sector

A DTI published guidance note on the use of Metric Units of measurement in the public sector sets out advice concerning the adoption by 01 October 1995 of metric units as the primary system of measurement for the conduct of public business in the UK. Part A sets out the background and general advice on metrication. Part B sets out more detailed advice on the use of metric units by the public sector. Supporing annexes cover Imperial Units of measurement available for primary use after 1 October 1995 and the principal metric units of measurement.
