Focussing on the delivery of public services at national and local levels.
The Prime Minister has strengthened and focused the governance of public service reform and Transformational Government. DA(PED) [External website], the newly established Cabinet Committee to govern the delivery of public services, subsumes the work of its predecessor committees with responsibilities in this area: PSX(E), IM (identity management) and MISC (31) (information sharing). DA(PED) is the first committee of Cabinet to look at all delivery issues across public services in one place. Ministers on the committee are at Cabinet level with Tom Watson, MP, Cabinet Office Minister and Sir David Varney, who also attends.
Two official-level bodies are critical to the delivery of service transformation. The Delivery Council [External website], now chaired by Sir David Varney, brings together those across central government with ultimate responsibility for service delivery. In 2007 a counterpart Local Government Delivery Council (LGDC) was created to bring together delivery leaders from the local authority community. Janet Callender (Chief Executive of Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council), a Delivery Council member and the LGDC chair, links the two bodies.
