The introduction of a full interactive website by the UK Passport Service now allows customers to submit an application form online. This is then posted back to the customer to add their signature, photos, the fee and any documentation in a seamless and easy-to-use process. Customers can also post a query on the website and get a reply within four hours. The service believes its revamped website, which is constantly improved and updated, is a key route of access for its customers.

Information at a single touch
Preston Disablement Services Centre offers a specialist service for people of all ages with who need wheelchairs and/or artificial limbs to get around. Consulting their service users on how to improve information on all the facilities and services on offer at the centre led to the introduction of a touch screen computer system. Simply by touching the screen, users can easily access information about the centre's facilities, staff and equipment.
'The system means there is no need to operate a computer mouse or use a keyboard,' said Kim Hoyles, the centre's Business Planning and Quality Manager. The package also carries information on other organisations, which may provide help, or is of interest to people with long-term mobility problems. Centre staff hope to fully develop the system so that it provides a complete information package for people with disabilities, including educational and other opportunities in the community.

Dog Warden Dennis Oakman, who works for Bath and North East Somerset Council, took a council-run course in website design to create his own site on responsible dog ownership. He now gets responses from interested parties all over the world, including recent information on dangerous dogs from a pit bull owner in America, and requests for information from academics in Australia. With help from the council's IT department, he regularly updates the site with topical information for dog owners, such as keeping pets safe on fireworks night and how to deal with the death of a pet.
Another council-run course gave him the skills to create a Powerpoint presentation which he uses to educate dog owners, dog groups and the wider public on a wide range of issues.
