New areas of Cabinet Office and ministerial responsibility

As a result of the Prime Ministers recent reshuffle on 6 May the Cabinet Office was given two new areas of responsibility – social exclusion and the Third Sector.

Following discussions with ministers changes to the Cabinet Office organisational structure will now take place.

A new Social Exclusion task force has been set up, run by the Prime Minister's Strategy Unit, some of the Social Exclusion Unit in the Department for Communities and Local Government and other external bodies.

A new Office of the Third Sector will also be part of the Cabinet Office and run by staff from the Active Communities Directorate in the Home Office and the Social Enterprise Unit in the Department of Trade and Industry. Staff from these units will be transferred to the Cabinet Office to run the office and a new head of the Office of the Third Sector at Director General level will soon be advertised for.

Ministerial Responsibilities

Hilary Armstrong, Minister for the Cabinet Office, has agreed the new division of ministerial responsibilities including the new areas of departmental responsibility.

The new responsibilities fit in with the Cabinet Office's three core objectives and with the aim of driving forward particular cross–departmental priority areas.
