Nick Clegg, Deputy Prime Minister

Biography

Nick Clegg has been leader of the Liberal Democrat Party since 2007. Previously, he was the Liberal Democrat Shadow Home Secretary (2006–2007) and Shadow Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs (2005–2006). He was also the Europe Spokesperson.

He served as Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for the East Midlands (1999–2004), where he became Trade and Industry Spokesman for the Liberal Group of MEPs. He was advisor to European Commission vice president Sir Leon Brittan (1996–1999), acting as trade negotiator with China and Russia. Before this he worked as an official on international aid for the European Commission (1994–1996).

He also worked in New York as a trainee journalist, in London as a political consultant and in Budapest, writing about economic reform.

Nick gained an MA in Social Anthropology at the University of Cambridge (1986–1989). He continued his post-graduate studies in political philosophy at the University of Minnesota (1989–1990) and gained an MA in European Affairs at the College of Europe in Bruges (1991–1992).

He speaks Dutch, French, German and Spanish. His mother is Dutch and his father Russian. He grew up in Oxfordshire.

Nick is married to Miriam, a partner in an international law firm. They have three young sons.

He enjoys the outdoors, skiing and mountaineering.
