In October 2005 the European Commission announced a three-year programme for simplifying existing EU legislation covering 222 basic acts of legislation, affecting over 1400 related legal acts. Priority areas for simplification are the automotive, construction and waste sectors. It is expected that the three-year programme will be updated annually.
Also in October 2005, the European Commission published a Communication on Simplification and Better Regulation for the Common Agricultural Policy. This followed a Commission Communication of December 2004 on simplifying and improving the regulatory environment of the Common Fisheries Policy.
The European Commission chairs sectoral groups to consider the competitiveness and regulation of the pharmaceutical, mechanical engineering and ICT sectors as well as a cross-cutting group to examine the coherence of energy, environment and competitiveness policies.
