The European Commission has set standards for use across the Commission's Directorates-General for consulting on policy proposals as a key element of its policy development process. The minimum length for a formal consultation by the European Commission is eight weeks. The UK Government endeavours to inform British stakeholders of Commission consultation exercises and encourages them to participate.
Consultations by the Government on issues of a European nature are subject to the Consultation Code of Practice.
