  1. Global Poverty Action Fund

The Impact Window of the DFID Global Poverty Action Fund is now open for concept notes for grants of £250,000 - £4 million, with a deadline of 19 September.

The criteria has been broadened since last year to include work on empowerment and accountability, as well as conflict, security and justice.

The list of eligible countries has also been revised to reflect the results of DFID’s Bilateral Aid Review and the new focus countries. The bottom 50 countries in the 2010 UN Human Development Index remain eligible.

  2. Civil society space - what next?

What are the practical and policy implications of a rapidly shrinking operating space for development NGOs in many countries and a changing UK legislative and regulatory environment?

Does government increasingly see NGOs as agents of service delivery rather than a citizen voice in policy debate or for building social capital? Does the UK have lessons to export to, or import from, the south?

On 8 September, Bond directors will join speakers Sam Younger CBE, Chief Executive of the Charity Commission, and John Clark, Board member of the International Centre on Not-for-Profit Law, to explore these issues at Bond's next Leaders' Series event.

Find out more about the event and book a place online. Please note: this event is limited to Bond member directors or senior colleagues.

  3. Influencing the EU: Bond publishes guide

Fully revised since the Lisbon Treaty came into force, this advocacy guide explains how to influence European Union (EU) international development policies.

It provides an overview of the EU, its decision-making structures and the key agreements and strategies that guide the EU’s approach to development, and introduces the main EU institutions and their specific role in relation to development.  It goes on to explain the key steps for planning an EU advocacy campaign.

  4. Nick moves on

Nick Roseveare, Chief Executive of Bond since 2008, will leave in November to become Chief Executive at the Bond member organisation MAG, the Mines Advisory Group.

Under Nick’s leadership, Bond has established itself as a major force in international development, leading the UK NGO community at a national, European and global level. He has also been a pioneer in developing the Bond Effectiveness Programme - finding common ways to prove and improve, and report on, the quality and effectiveness of our work and our organisations.

Anna Feuchtwang, Chair of Bond Board of Trustees, said:

“Nick leaves a tremendous legacy and we wish him all the very best in the future. The Board will be acting swiftly to appoint a similarly high calibre successor to continue the essential work of Bond this exciting stage in its evolution and to build on the successes of the last three years.”

  5. Anti-bribery guidance welcomed

Bond members came together at KPMG on 20 July for the launch of the Bond Anti-bribery Principles and Guidance for NGOs.

The event, chaired by Nick Roseveare, Bond Chief Executive, and which heard speakers including Tim Boyes-Watson, co-chair of the Bond group working on the guidance, KPMG’s Head of Anti-corruption, Brent McDaniel and Phil Mason, Head of the Anti-corruption Team at DFID, gave members the opportunity to discuss the practicalities of implementing a zero-tolerance approach to bribery within their organisations.
