Science and Engineering Profession
There are estimated to be around 18,000 scientists and engineers in government. They encompass a wide range of roles, from conducting research in laboratories to interpreting science for policy and delivery within Whitehall departments. In addition, many scientists and engineers in government who are not working in a technical field are nonetheless involved in providing advice which relies to some degree on their analytical experience.
Although this is a large proportion of the Civil Service recognition of the profession’s contribution to policy is variable, particularly in comparison to other analytical professions. To improve recognition of the contribution that the profession can and does make, it is critical to build a strong and vibrant community with robust links between the different analytical streams and policy makers.
This site aims to support civil service scientists and engineers. This includes introducing them to the cross-Government community of scientists and engineers in Government, Government Science & Engineering (GSE), providing support to career development activities, and giving background on the strategy for supporting the science and engineering profession.
This work is led by the Government Chief Scientific Adviser (GCSA), Professor John Beddington, whose role is also that as Head of Science and Engineering Profession.
