Proposal for a "Recast" WEEE Directive
The original WEEE Directive published at the beginning of 2003 and committed the European Commission to submit a report to the European Parliament and European Council within five years, along with proposals for revisions to the original Directive.
The Commission published proposals for a “recast” of the Directive in December 2008. These are now being considered by both the Environment Council and the Environment Committee of the European Parliament. The EP Environment Committee has proposed a number of amendments to the Commission’s proposals, which are subject to a vote in a plenary session of the Parliament.
The UK has agreed with the overall aim of the recast to reduce the administrative burdens of business wherever possible whilst maintaining the overall environmental objectives, (particularly where these are not addressed by other EU legislation).
BIS undertook an informal consultation exercise on the Commission’s proposals in April 2009 and is committed to consulting and updating key stakeholders on an ongoing basis as the negotiations go forward.
