Newspaper Mergers

The public interest considerations relating to media mergers (newspaper and broadcasting) came into force on 29 December 2003 when they were inserted into the Enterprise Act by the Communications Act 2003.

Our guidance on the public interest considerations relating to media mergers sets out the background to the new regime, explains when intervention in media mergers by the Secretary of State is possible, and the process for considering mergers on media public interest grounds.

Since the commencement of the Enterprise Act, newspaper merger provisions on 29 December 2003, no intervention notices have been issued in newspaper cases.

29 January 2010 - Department announced its decision relating to DMGT's request to be released from conditions imposed in relation to its acquisition of the Nottingham Evening Post. The text of the full decision is now available.
