Energy Related Products

Plug and socketThe ERP Directive 2009/125/EC is a framework Directive which sets minimum requirements for the eco-design of energy related products and focuses on energy-in-use. This CE marking Directive is transposed into UK law under statutory instrument SI 2010 No:2617.

What are the policy objectives and the intended effects?

Defra says:

"Benefits of implementing a robust compliance and enforcement regime include:

a) cost savings in the form of reduced consumer energy bills, CO2 emissions savings and other environmental benefits;

b) delivery of the 2007 energy white paper commitments on raising product energy efficiency standards and stimulating global competition;

c) contribution towards the UK's 80% CO2 reduction targets; and

d) creating a level playing field for UK business. Failure to implement an effective compliance and enforcement regime could also result in significant EU fines and reputational damage for the UK".
