Sir John spoke at the Earthwatch Annual Oxford Lecture 2011 at the Said Business School, Oxford. Also speaking at the Lecture was Sir David King. Attendees at the lecture were corporate/research/business/academics from Earthwatch, Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment and Open University Sir john discussed global challenges facing science and scientist in the new decade, including how to weather the perfect storm,  the role of science in a world of hazard, risk and vulnerability and the importance of communicating evidence and uncertainties.

Sir John gave the Museum of English Rural Life Annual Lecture in Reading and the George Scott Robinson Lecture in Belfast. In both these speeches he focused on the impact of increasing food prices, the challenges facing agriculture if we are to feed an increasing population equitably, healthily and sustainably and identified some potential solutions.

Sir John visited the John Innes Centre and Norwich Research Park, to learn  more about the JIC projects on crop genetics, disease and stress biology and molecular biology among others.

On the 3rd November 2010, Sir John gave the closing key note address at the CropWorld 2010 event, "Producing more with less: The business science, trade and technology of global crop production", sharing a platform with Jim Paice MP, Minister of State for Agriculture and Food.

In his speech, Sir John discussed the issue of food security, focussing on recent food price spikes and a project due to be published in early 2010 by the Government Office for Science Foresight team on Global Food and Farming Futures. Sir John also provided his thoughts on some of the key themes that had featured at the conference including food and agriculture research funding, land use, water, novel pest management and genetically modified foods.

Sir John Beddington visited Japan and gave key note speeches at the Royal Society’s 350th anniversary celebrations in Tokyo and in the Energy for the Future session of the Science and Technology in Society Forum in Kyoto. He also gave an interview to a leading newspaper on climate science and held a series of bilateral meetings with high level representatives from around a dozen countries. Lastly, he represented the UK in a Ministerial roundtable hosted by the Japanese government.
