The Environmental and Technical Regulation Directorate has two key roles:
Lead responsibility within BIS for Government policy on ensuring interests of business are taken into account in policy development, such as in, waste, air and water quality.
Negotiation, transposition and implementation of Producer Responsibility where BIS has lead responsibility and monitoring and working with Defra where it does not.
Also lead responsibility on WEEE, ROHS, Packaging, End of Life Vehicles, Batteries, Tyres and Energy using products (EuP)
Coordination of policy on EU New Approach Internal Market ("CE Marking") legislation including Regulation 765/2008 on Accreditation and Market Surveillance and Decision 768/2008 on a Common Framework for the marketing of products and for development of Market Surveillance Strategy.
Negotiation, implementation, administration and interpretation of a wide range of EU Internal Market Technical directives including ATEX, Gas Appliances, Pressure Equipment, Simple Pressure Vessels, Machinery, Lifts, Noise of Outdoor Machinery, Recreational Craft, Personal Protective Equipment, Electromagnetic Compatibility, Low Voltage Electrical Safety and Radio and Telecommunications Terminal Equipment. Also includes the application of the UK Safety Regulations covering Plugs and Sockets.
