The expert group will examine how to improve the business environment to facilitate the UK automotive sector in extracting maximum competitive advantage to 2025 and beyond, linked to the overall UK manufacturing strategy.

Remit

To identify, examine, and develop recommendations on the key business environment issues for the sector. Suggested themes for discussion are:

  • Competitiveness: How to facilitate stronger UK supply chain resilience by improving links with emerging markets’ supply base;
  • Competitiveness: How to attract greater inward investment by combining with other industrial sectors (working smarter to achieve a higher international profile);
  • Skills/Image: How to make the sector more attractive, obtain and develop the right skill sets for new technologies, design and marketing and to improve diversity;
  • Competitiveness/Image: How to raise the sector’s profile in the UK economy and within Government policy;
  • Environment: How to expedite reduction of sector’s CO2 footprint (manufacturing, retail/servicing i.e. non vehicle tail pipe); and
  • Any supporting changes to tax or grant structures.

These issues are likely to be closely aligned to generic business issues (e.g. sourcing the right skills) and to have strong inter-relationships with the work of the other expert groups. The work of this expert group should therefore compliment rather than duplicate, and should focus upon sector specific solutions to ensure the sector leverages maximum advantage. There may also be a common theme related to improving the perceived image of the sector and how this can facilitate these.
