Skills Issues in the Marine Sector

The Forum is also pursuing various initiatives aimed at improving the skills base of the marine engineering industry, in order to ensure that it has all the necessary skills to meet the considerable demands that will be placed on it over the coming decade.

The Marine Sector Skills Agreement was the culmination of an in-depth analysis of the current skills provision and future needs of the sector (commercial and naval shipbuilding and repair, leisure boatbuilding and marine equipment sectors). The Agreement sets out the skills needed by that the marine sector needs to sustain growth and competitiveness in the years ahead, and identifies how those skills will be supplied. The Agreement highlights: management and leadership; productivity and competitiveness; technical workforce development; and manpower planning and recruitment as the key priorities. The Sector Skills Council for Science, Engineering and Manufacturing Technologies (SEMTA) is started to implement the Agreement. The Treasury is contributing £500,000 towards its implementation.
