Somalia - UN Arms Embargo

NOTICE TO EXPORTERS - 19/02 - November 2002

  1. UN Security Council Resolution 1425(2002) of 22 July 2002 extended the mandatory UN arms embargo on Somalia, imposed by Resolution 733 (1992) as amended by Resolution 1356 (2001), to include a prohibition on the direct or indirect supply to Somalia of technical advice, financial and other assistance and training related to military activities.

  2. The Somalia (United Nations Sanctions) Order 2002 (SI 2002/2628), which came into force on 24 October, implements the embargo in the UK. The opportunity has been taken to include in this Order the provisions of the United Nations Arms Embargoes (Liberia, Somalia and the former Yugoslavia) Order 1993(SI 1993/1787), as amended, in so far as that Order relates to Somalia, and to delete all references to Somalia in the 1993 Order.
