Embargoed Destinations - FAQs

  1. Is there a list of the embargoed destinations anywhere on your website?
  2. How do we check on the status of a country? If it states that the data was last updated 2 years ago, is this still current?

Question 1 - Is there a list of the embargoed destinations anywhere on your website?

The ECO website lists Current Arms Embargoes and Other Restrictions (arms related only).

Other sanctions - such as financial or travel embargoes might also be in place on the same or other destinations. You should access the HM Treasury website for details of financial sanctions or the FCO website for a comprehensive list of all countries currently subject to embargoes.

Question 2 - How do we check on the status of a country? If it states that the data was last updated 2 years ago, is this still current?

If a country is on an embargoed list, the information will be current. The date may be listed as 2 years ago, but if it is still current, the information will still appear. If the embargo ceases to be in effect, the information will be removed. Neither ECO nor the FCO have the resources to update the information needed for an exporter to make their own decision about the level of risk associated in making an export to any one country  in the world. Use common sense, look at the newspapers and use this information when anticipating concerns with a licence application. This website also includes statistics on the time taken to process applications and the number of refusals by country. See the Performance Reports and Statistics.
