Business Innovation

The Government’s aim is to create an environment in the UK in which innovation can flourish, where businesses identify and capture the benefits of their innovation, and where barriers to under-investment in innovation are significantly reduced.

We are seeking to achieve this through the following:

Reviewing SME Public Sector Procurement Opportunities

Anne Glover’s review, Accelerating the SME Economic Engine, published in November 2008, made twelve key recommendations aimed at tackling the barriers SMEs face when looking to supply the public sector. Government accepted all twelve recommendations and implementation work is currently in progress.

University Enterprise Networks

Supported by BIS, the National Council for Graduate Entrepreneurship is working with Regional Development Agencies to develop a number of University Enterprise Networks (UEN’s). The purpose of the UEN’s is to embed in our universities a culture that encourages and builds the capacity of students and graduates to be enterprising, innovative and entrepreneurial in both their thinking and actions.

A UEN comprises a partnership between one or more private sector organisations, and the universities within a region. Each UEN may focus on a particular sector, and may cover one or more regions.

Innovation Procurement Policy

BIS is leading the Government's work to develop a public procurement culture that both stimulates innovation in the economy and helps the public sector to meet its future needs at better value for money for the taxpayer.
