Social enterprises are businesses with primarily social objectives whose surpluses are principally reinvested for that purpose in the business or community, rather than being driven by the need to maximise profit for shareholders and owners.
The government recognises that social enterprises have a valuable role to play in the UK economy and is fully committed to creating an environment in which all enterprise, including social enterprise, can thrive and grow.
We are working with the Office of the Third Sector, who lead on Government policy on social enterprise, to ensure that support for business is available to all business, including social enterprises and other third sector businesses.
