Ethnic Minority Enterprise

  • There are an estimated 310 thousand ethnic minority SMEs in the UK, contributing an estimated £20 billion to the UK economy per year – five per cent of total SME GVA (£398bn in 2006).1

  • They make up around seven per cent of all SMEs in the UK, comprising an increasingly diverse range of businesses.2

Solutions for Business, the government's package of business support products, includes schemes that can assist under-represented groups, including ethnic minority groups. These schemes, which help with starting and growing a business, are accessible via the Business Link website and by telephoning the helpline on 0845 600 9 006 or face-to-face through local providers.

The Ethnic Minority Business Task Force (EMBTF) was set up by the government in June 2007 for two years to help stimulate growth among the Black, Asian & Minority Ethnic business based in England. The task force was co-chaired by James Caan of TV’s Dragon’s Den and Tom Riordan, CEO of Yorkshire Forward and comprised 11 other members with a wealth of business expertise. The EMBTF completed its work on 16th July 2009 and presented some recommendations to BIS on how Government can intervene in this area. The Government has issued its response to this report.

The government funded Make Your Mark campaign has built a bank of accessible champions and Ambassadors to act as role models for young people in our ethnic minority communities.
