Fission Research

UK Research

The Engineering and Physical Science Research Council (ESPRC) has three major initiatives in nuclear fission research:

• EPSRC: Keeping the Nuclear Option Open Programme worth over £6 million. Further information is available on the Engineering and Physical Science Research Council (ESPRC): Keeping the Nuclear Option Open webpage.
• EPSRC has provided funding of ca £1 million to a Nuclear Technology Education Consortium (NTEC) to provide masters-level and continuing professional development training for the nuclear industries. More information can be found on the Nuclear Technology Education Consortium (NTEC) website.
• An Engineering Doctorate Centre in Nuclear Engineering is being set up, with funding of £5 million available from ESPRC. More information on UK fission research is available from the UK Energy Research Centre (UKERC) website. The UKERC mission is to be the UK's pre-eminent centre of research, and source of authoritative information and leadership, on sustainable energy systems.

European Research

Participation in European Research is available under the Euratom Framework Programme. The latest Framework Programme, FP7, started on 1 January 2007. EC Funding for research in FP7 Euratom Fission is €287 million, an increase from €190 million available under the last CORDIS: Sixth Framework Programme. The Euratom FP research covers nuclear waste and decommissioning, radiation protection and reactor safety, including advanced reactor systems. More details can be found on BERR's FP7 UK website.
