The Government’s commitment to increasing the share of the UK’s energy supply from renewable and low-carbon technologies has focused mainly on the potential for reducing carbon emissions. Over longer time horizons a higher penetration of renewable energy makes a positive contribution to security of fuel supply and in the very long term the fuel inputs to renewable energy are abundant.
We examine the availability of renewable energy resources in the UK and the scope for harnessing them over the medium term.
