Reporting an incident to the police

Some companies are reluctant to involve the police when they suffer information security incidents involving criminal behaviour, fearing bad publicity. PR can be one of the strongest drivers when managing an incident or crisis.

Most police forces have specialist teams who deal with information security incidents, including fraud.

If you are concerned about illegal or offensive material on websites or newsgroups, you should contact the Internet Watch Foundation. The IWF was established by concerned Internet firms in the UK, to provide a facility for removing illicit material from the Internet. It is ideally placed to decide on the legality of the offending site or newsgroup, and will inform the police as appropriate.
