BERR decided two years ago to bring together a team of electronics industry leaders to look at the future of the sector in the UK. This Electronics "Innovation and Growth Team", or IGT, published its report at the end of 2004 and made around 80 recommendations for the Government and Industry to consider. A sector competitive analysis report "Competitiveness in the UK Electronics Sector", commissioned to underpin the work of the EIGT is also available both in hard copy format via BERRs Publications site or it can be downloaded in pdf format from the Downloads page.
The overall message from the report was a lack of any coherent strategic voice for the electronics industry. The sector is fragmented and virtually invisible to key policy makers, including the Regional Development Agencies. As a result many worthy initiatives had failed to succeed because of insufficient critical mass and the ability to influence policy or address business opportunities strategically. To address this BERR and the electronics industry have worked together to set up the following strategic groups:
The Electronics Leadership Council is a small business-led group whose role is to set a strategic agenda for the industry and to oversee the implementation of the IGT report's key recommendations. Harry Tee (currently Chairman Dialight plc) is Chairman of the Leadership Council, which met for the first time on 26th October 2005. The Council has set up four groups to work on major issues identified by the EIGT report. These include: skills; the supply chain; technology; and public procurement. The EIGT report recommended that electronics industry stakeholders needed to work more closely together with a unified voice whenever possible. BERR have been working with those stakeholders since April on bringing together the main trade associations to form a UK Electronics Industry Alliance and agreement between the parties and funding is now in place. The Alliance will help electronics trade associations to work together on the IGT agenda and will complement the work of the new Electronics Leadership Council. The Alliance met for the first time on 15th December 2005.
The Group's role is to increase industry influence on EU regulation. Comprising trade associations representatives and officials from BERR and other main regulatory departments that impact on the electronics sector (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs; Health and Safety Executive; Home Office; and Treasury), the Regulatory Group will bring together these industry and government experts to help industry identify the future challenges and opportunities that will be created by regulation. The Group met for the first time on 17th October 2005.
