The Science Programme was set up in 1957 to strengthen the NATO Alliance by means of scientific collaboration and to foster scientific development in its member states. More recently, "Outreach" activities were added to strengthen links between NATO and its former adversaries. The most recent initiative of the NATO Science Committee is the Science for Peace & Security Programme which aims to assist "Partner" countries in their transition towards a market-orientated and environmentally sound economy.
The Science Programme has aimed at supporting collaboration between individual scientists. It has a reputation for high standards of scientific excellence and a minimum of bureaucracy. More information is available from NATO's home page.
