Small and Medium Enterprise and Business Start-ups and Closures Statistics

The statistical work on Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), entrepreneurship, start-ups and closures is carried out by the Statistics Team within the Enterprise Directorate Analytical Unit. The work undertaken by the team covers the following areas:

• the production and publication of two National Statistics publications: Small and Medium Enterprise Statistics for the UK and Regions and Business Start-ups and Closures: VAT Registrations and De-registrations

• the production and publication of VAT-based business survival rates

• the development of the enterprise evidence base to assist in monitoring the Enterprise Strategy
• a statistical service to policy makers, including briefing and monitoring of Public Service Agreements
