BIS European work

BIS leads on many European policy areas that contribute to the Government’s commitment to play a strong and positive role with our EU partners, with the goal of ensuring that all the nations of Europe are equipped to face the challenges of the 21st century: in particular, global competitiveness, global warming and global poverty

Two European Union flags

BIS is responsible for a range of EU policies that will strengthen economic growth including trade, single market, the digital agenda, better regulation, competition, enterprise and industry, and research and innovation policy. BIS Ministers and officials work closely with the European Commission, the European Parliament and other Member States to develop policy in these areas and deliver benefits to the UK.

The Government has published a pamphlet Let’s Choose Growth setting out why it’s time for growth in Europe. In the pamphlet there is a stark warning that if current trends continue, by the middle of the century, leading EU nations could fall out of the world’s top-10 most powerful economies.

The pamphlet comes as a growing number of EU countries are making the case for action on growth, deregulation and completing the single market.

EU Councils - BIS involvement

BIS Ministers and officials attend many of the European Union Councils that take decisions on policies directly affecting businesses, consumers and employees. The main Councils meeting, where BIS has an interest, are the following:

  • Competitiveness
  • Employment & Social Policy
  • Transport, Telecoms & Energy
  • General Affairs and External Relations Council

Further information on the responsibilities of these Councils, including Minutes of all Council meetings can be found from the EU Council's on-line Newsroom.
