Context

The ability of businesses to contribute to a truly sustainable construction industry will depend to a large extent on the awareness and skills of their people. That is why the Strategy has placed a strong emphasis on Commitment to People, in line with the industry’s broader Construction Commitments. Skills, training, health and safety in particular feature in the Strategy document.

The Strategy’s broad approach is to champion a formal approach to training and development, and to seek to influence the influencers with a view to instilling a culture of training, and life long learning/continuous professional development across construction businesses. By so doing, working with the Sector Skills Council and others, we encourage businesses to develop not only the generic skills sets of their people, but their sector-specific and ‘green-skills’. These will vary according to commercial need, and market demand. Training providers, and advisers (e.g. through Train to Gain), are able to advise and respond to specific training needs.

Actions and Deliverables

Overarching Targets

An increase in organisations committed to a planned approach to training. ConstructionSkills aims to increase the number of organisations adopting Training Plans or committing to Investors in People (or other business support tools) to 6,400 by 2010, and 9,400 by 2015.

Reduce the incidence rate of fatal and major injury accidents by 10% year on year from 2000 levels.
