It is a great pleasure to join you this evening to present this year's London Smart awards.

We are here to celebrate the achievement of 22 companies in the London region – companies who have been successful in winning Smart funding from the DTI.

Smart provides grants to help individuals and small and medium sized businesses with either feasibility studies on innovate technologies or development grants to take a promising new product or process to pre-production  prototype stage.

Here in London alone during the past year, we've given £1.38m in grants to 28 projects. This has levered in capital investment totalling £2.7 million.

This is double the number of Smart grants awarded in the previous year and takes the total investment in cutting edge London companies to £5m in the last two years alone.

And just look at the exciting products and processes now being developed by London companies. Like an energy storage piston that that will reduce fuel consumption and reduce exhaust emissions. Or like the stunning technology to transform high-end 3D games. 28 companies here with us – all Smart winners - have demonstrated innovative approaches to solving today's technological challenges.

Enterprise innovation is one of the priorities for this Government.

Smart is of course an important element of the support on offer through the Small Business Service, helping small firms design and implement innovative solutions for today's market; solutions that without such support might never have seen the light of day.

So it gives me great pleasure to be here this evening and to present these awards.
