What Is Microgeneration?

Government defines microgeneration as the production of heat and/or electricity on a small-scale from a low carbon source. Microgeneration can provide low carbon energy to a range of building sizes including homes, businesses, schools and communities. The various technologies have the potential to help us achieve our objectives of tackling climate change, ensuring reliable energy and tackling fuel poverty.

Electricity generating technologies

Solar photovoltaics (PV)
Wind
Hydro

Heat generating technologies

Solar thermal
Heat pumps (ground source heat pumps, air source heat pumps)
Biomass

Co-generating technologies (electricity and heat)

Combined Heat and Power (CHP)
Hydrogen and Fuel Cells

See Section 82 of the Energy Act 2004 for a legal definition of microgeneration.
