The ACCAT was set up by BERR to provide expert, independent advice to Ministers, the Department and others in Government on matters concerning technologies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions to the atmosphere, particularly carbon dioxide emissions from power generation and other large industrial processes using fossil fuel. This advice can either be volunteered by members or sought from members by the Department. The Committee will not only cover technical issues but also the commercial, social, economic and regulatory issues around the deployment of these technologies in the UK and globally.
The membership of the committee reflects the full scope of the Carbon Abatement Technology sector, including (although not exclusively) academic and research institutions, oil and gas companies, equipment manufacturers, process plant engineering companies, pipelines and storage experts and utilities.
The ACCAT meets about once every three to four months but can meet more frequently depending on need.
Since its formation in October 2008, the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) now provides the Secretariat for the ACCAT and takes responsibility for briefing and agreeing the agenda for meetings with the Chairperson before each one.
