Policy: Wave and Tidal

The DTI (former BERR) consultation document ‘Future Offshore’ anticipated that in the longer term there might be separate rounds for marine renewable technologies, such as wave and tidal stream power, when they can be deployed on a commercial scale. The document also anticipated that developers would come forward with requests for sites for demonstrators of these technologies. It stated that these requests would have to be considered on their merits.

In order to consider how best to exploit this potential, while having due regard to the consent process, the then DTI held two stakeholder workshops with industry and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in January and March 2005 on the deployment of pre-commercial scale marine renewable devices off the coast of England and Wales. The results of those workshops and the feedback received on the outcome document are  available below;

Taking forward the results of the workshops in November 2005, the DTI issued guidance on the consents process for wave and tidal demonstration projects in England and Wales. A copy of the guidance document can be found below:

To help the Government identify the priority areas of the seabed suitable for future commercial exploitation of renewable energy, the DTI commissioned a study of UK marine renewables. The outcome of this study was published on 1 September 2004 and can be viewed from the BERR Publications page (search for ‘Atlas’).
