The Energy Technology Data Exchange Energy Database

The Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDE) Energy Database, formed in 1987, is the world’s largest and most comprehensive source of bibliographic information on energy-related publications, such as journals, conference papers, technical books, and reports. It is a multilateral information exchange programme managed as an Implementing Agreement of the International Energy Agency (IEA).

ETDE’s objectives are to:

  • exchange energy research and technology information
  • disseminate and provide energy information
  • support IEA strategic priorities regarding energy technology and R&D collaboration
  • work with information providers to avoid duplication of effort.

Over 15 countries co-operate to make sure that energy information published within their national borders is added to the database, which includes over 4 million records. It provides an invaluable technical, business and market information source on such topics as:

  • renewable energy
  • fossil fuels
  • environmental sciences
  • energy conservation, storage and use
  • nuclear fission/fusion
  • materials and engineering related to energy
  • energy aspects of physical sciences
  • energy policies.

The database is of use to anyone with an interest in energy, be it energy policy, planning, production, climate change, environment, or R&D. ETDE does not, however, include information on energy statistics. Instead, statistics are available from the International Energy Agency. UK statistics are available from BERR.

Using the database

The ETDE World Energy Base (ETDEWEB), a new web product, was launched in November 1999. It allows individuals in ETDE member countries to access a subset of the ETDE Energy Database through the internet.

ETDEWEB currently includes more than 600,000 bibliographic records and 3.5 million pages of full text from 1995 onwards. It is continuously being updated with new records and ETDE backfiles.

One of the main benefits of ETDEWEB is that it assists users in obtaining the full text of the documents in which they are interested. Where there is no copyright or other restrictions, users will be able to download these from the ETDEWEB website. If this is not possible, users will be signposted to a document supply centre or publisher who can supply the full text.

The ETDEWEB service is available free of charge within the UK. After initial registration, you will be able to search the database on future occasions without charge.
