The Government recognises that a world class effective regulatory regime is essential if the public is to have confidence in the safety and security of nuclear power, and could also be a critical differentiator for the UK in securing access to international investment in new nuclear facilities.
The Government announced in Meeting the energy challenge: a white paper on nuclear power that it will be working with the regulators to explore ways of enhancing further the transparency and efficiency of the regulatory regime, without diminishing its effectiveness in dealing with the challenges of new nuclear power stations.
Dr Tim Stone, advisor to the Secretary of State, was appointed to undertake such a review. One purpose of the review is to consider how the Nuclear Installations Inspectorate is equipped to assess new build proposals through the Generic Design Assessment process.
Dr Stone announced his initial findings at the Nuclear Investors’ Conference on 12 June 2008.
