The UK Coal Forum: Chairman

John Harris, who retires as Chair of the Coal Authority, after eight years, at the end of September 2007, has agreed to take up the role of Chair of the Coal Forum with immediate effect.

He is currently Chair of the MoD Police and Guarding Agency Audit Committee and a member of the MoD Agency Owners Advisory Board, a Board member (Chair 1994-2000) of Northern Counties Housing Association Ltd. A member of the Guinness Trust Partnership Board, a member of the Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust, and is Chair of The Governors of Wakefield District Community School and Chair of the St Leger Eco Project. He is involved in community development in Midrand, South Africa and is Joint Chair Ivory Park Township / Wakefield Education Partnership.

Since 1986 he has been a legal, recruitment and management consultant, notably as founder Executive Director (1992 to 2001) of Solace International (1992) Ltd., undertaking public sector reform assignments overseas (particularly in South Africa) as well as in the UK. Previously he served for twenty-three years in local government, as a solicitor and manager, latterly as County Secretary and then Chief Executive of the South Yorkshire Metropolitan County Council. Past non-executive roles include Pontefract Health Authority, Special Hospitals Service Authority Rampton Committee, West Yorkshire Police Authority, Arts Council Touring Board and Homeless International Ltd. He has two law degrees from Cambridge University.

He was awarded his CBE "for services to industry" and received in 2007 a Coal UK award for his "outstanding contribution to the coal industry".
