Independent assessors are appointed by the DTI for Technology Programme bi-annual (Spring and Autumn) competitions. Assessors may become aware of vacancies during DTI consultations with business and key stakeholders in technology priority areas that form part of the competition. Alternatively, they could apply for positions that are advertised or provide expressions of interest through this website when competitions are announced.
Prior to undertaking any duties, assessors must sign a contract of appointment that includes clear stipulations about confidentiality and conflicts of interest. They are required to be impartial, equitable and treat every application in the strictest confidence.
Briefing sessions are offered for assessors to ensure that they employ their expertise in making high quality decisions following open and transparent procedures. Assessors are also given tools necessary to successfully carry out their contractual duties. Furthermore, there is written guidance to complement the briefing sessions and a telephone help-line to address any issues or queries that arise.
Outline proposals are evaluated using a ‘downloadable’ score-sheet. Full proposals are marked similarly supplemented by one or more meetings of assessors’ to discuss full proposals.
If few projects are submitted that match an assessor’s area of expertise, that assessor may not be called upon.
