What type of work does the NMS fund?

The NMS funds a broad range of activities. The majority is geared towards research into measurement and the development of new measurement techniques, procedures and instrumentation, many of which are undertaken by the National Measurement Institutes. Maintenance of primary national measurement standards is also largely funded such as the provision of high-accuracy non-routine calibration and testing services and the provision of traceability in measurement through a pyramid of accreditation. The knowledge transfer activities promote the wide uptake and exploitation of NMS outputs, and underpin regulation, for example, through type approval and control in the use of weighing machines and volume measurement equipment used in trade. The support for international activities, for example, the management of international technical inter-comparisons is also funded. Across the UK we are fortunate to maintain one of the most effective measurement infrastructures in the world in delivering top-class measurement science and technology.
