Consultative Document - Proposed Amendments to the Community Interest Companies Regulations 2005

Starting Date: 23-02-09

Closing Date: 06-04-09

BERR is asking for views on proposed amendments to the Community Interest Company Regulations 2005.

The Community Interest Company (CIC) was introduced by the Companies (Audit, Investigation and Community Enterprise) Act 2004 as a new legal form for social enterprises who want to use the company form while ensuring assets are used for the benefit of the community. The Community Interest Company Regulations 2005 brought the CIC into effect in July 2005.

The proposed amendments are intended to clarify and update the Regulations in light of experience to date and more recent legislative changes. The proposals do not change the Government’s policy approach to CICs or impose new burdens so this is a short informal consultation only. An impact assessment was prepared at the time of the original legislation and is available on the Community Interest Companies page.

Views are welcome from CICs and other individuals or organisations working in or with the Third Sector who may have experience of or interest in the operation of CICs.
