Proposal to continue cross-subsidy arrangements for independent gas systems

Starting Date: 02-08-07

Closing Date: 27-09-07

This consultation seeks respondents views on the proposal to continue cross-subsidy arrangements for some 8,400 gas consumers in remote locations in Scotland, Wales and Northern England that are not connected to the main gas transportation system.

These "Independent Systems" are supplied gas in liquefied form, or with propane. At present the transportation charges and commodity (difference between the price of gas for those supplied with propane and the price of natural gas) of these consumers are subsidised so they are no higher than average GB charges. This is in accordance with the Secretary of States' statutory duties under the Gas Act 1986 and ensures that these consumers are not denied the advantages of competition.

The consultation runs until 27 September and responses can be submitted to independentsystems@berr.gsi.gov.uk
